 Brush Island

21-22 November 2009

Coordinator: Sandie Walters

Accommodation
We will be diving the Brush Island area and camping at the Pretty Beach campsite on the weekend of 21st and 22nd November 2009.  If camping is not your thing, here’s a few other places to stay in the area offering a range of accommodation choices:

You can find details on how to get to Pretty Beach on the club's campsite link: http://scuba.club.anu.edu.au/sites/.
The NRMA has a trip planner which might help.

Pretty Beach Campground is a great place to camp with plenty of trees to setup a hammock and a short distance to a fantastic beach. Amenities are good but bring your own drinking water and $1 coins for the hot showers.

Diving
Who’d have thought......19 degree water, 20+m vis....in October!!!  It’s not just us who’s been enjoying it either, there are whales everywhere,  we’ve seen HUGE schools of large salmon at some of the dive sites and even a young green turtle. From Dive and Adventure Ulladulla website.

Sites vary. Shallower sites around Brush Island are 10-20 metres (and the Boiler, 26m). Deeper sites around 30-35 metres such as "Current Drop-Off", "Hammerhead Hole", "Lost" and "Found" are part of an extensive reef system. A little bit further out is "The Pinnacle" and the "Pleasure Dome" dropping off from ~20m to 40+ metres. The Pinnacle has a sheer cliff face that drops down to a great little cave at the bottom. At about 10 metres the rocky headland of Bawley Point is an excellent sheltered shore dive with heaps of marine life.

Boat dives will depart from the Kioloa boat ramp.

Air fills
We will get our tanks filled at the Ulladulla Dive and Adventure Centre for $7. That's the dive shop on the left as you enter town; 211 Princess Hwy.  Call Karen or Steve on (02) 4455 3029 if you have any questions, or go to http://www.ulladulladive.com.au/

Food/Cooking
Most people cook at the campground - cause its a super place (and there is a local supermarket and grog shop close by). And don't forget that the Bawley Point Cafe does some nice meals (both lunch and dinner including the famous Bawley Burger).

Gear issue and boat prep
Thursday 19th November, immediately before the trip, 5:30pm at the gear shed, North Oval. Please come and assist with boat prep for the weekend even if you dont require gear hire :)

If you want to come on this trip, email me: sandie.walters@anu.edu.au and let me know:

  1. when you plan on driving down and how many nights you are staying
  2. whether you need a lift, or can offer one (I strongly encourage carpooling)
  3. whether you need to hire any club gear (see the club gear web page)
  4. whether you can tow a boat
  5. whether you have a boat license
  6. if you are an ANU student
  7. if you would like to be on the early boat run on Saturday morning ~7.45 am at the boat ramp
  8. anything else you think I should know

Safety
Important: The ANUSC is a keen proponent of safe diving and boating. If you haven't checked recently, please take a look at the club safety page. If you sign up for this trip I will take it that you are familiar with the Club's safety practices. If you are in doubt about anything to do with this trip, and especially safety, ask me or any experienced club member.

Hope to see you there
