 Ulladulla

17-18 October 2009

Coordinator: Thomas Magill

So, the recent planned trip to Brush Island in September ended up diving Ulladulla instead. Quite understandable alterations in planning considering the weather at the time. However, that was a small trip, and I for one haven't been to that location in a while, so that's why the destination for the weekend 17-18 October isn't planned to change.
We only have one boat at the moment, so if this trip gets lots of punters we'll need to be prepared to do shoredives.

Diving

The Ulladulla area offers good boat and shore dives and is great for experienced, rusty and novice divers.

Boat dives include: Shore dives can be done from:

If the weather turns bad we can always go to Jervis Bay (65-70km, Time 1:05hrs, Park pass required) which has an excellent selection of dives for all levels of experience. Bowen Island always provides shelter from the east and south for the nursery, and there is a nice sheltered shore dive off Murrays Beach, not to mention Summercloud Bay which has good shore dives and is sheltered from the north and north east.

If there is weather from the south east we can do Bawley Point as a shore dive too. There is also Brush Island and the Boiler further to the south, but only for those who are comfortable in currents which are sometimes quite strong there, and the location is exposed.

Accommodation

We will be camping at Ulladulla Headland Tourist Park.
Costs are $11 per person per night ($5 for children 5yrs and over). They have a nice area to camp in (right on the headland), a cooking shed with hot water and basins for campers and convenient clean facilities. They are a walking distance from several excellent eateries in town. This is the place Steve Harding used to run most of his courses from before he built his house at Bawley Point.

Air Fills

$7 air fills have been arranged for ANU club members at the Ulladulla Dive & Adventure Centre
211 Princes Hwy, Ulladulla, NSW, 2539

Dive Planning

I will attempt to put together the first boat dive for Saturday ahead of time. So please email me if you want to get up early and be on the first boat. We have only one boat, so each trip is limited to 6 divers. That makes it important that we start early and have a well organised swap-over so not to waste time. Don't forget you can always organise a shore dive on Saturday morning.

Boat Ramps

Ulladulla harbour has 2 boat ramps for the general public. We will probably use the northern one.

Safe Diving

The ANUSC is a keen proponent of safe diving practices and actively encourages all divers to:

The ANUSC actively encourages all members to become familiar with the operation of the Club's safety equipment. If in doubt, ask.

Are you coming?

The current plan is to be geared-up at the northern boat ramp at 8am. Last details about this can be discussed during gear issue when I have a better idea of who's coming and what the weather might be like.

If you want to participate please send me an email and let me know:

Gear Issue and Boat Prep

Gear issue will happen on Thursday, 15th October at 5:30pm at the gear shed. Where's that? North of ANU Campus, past the tennis courts, over Barry Drive, to North Oval, McCaughey Street, Turner (Yellow pages: map #49 D15). Please be availble to help getting the boat ready for the weekends diving.

Ciao, Tom
