 Montague Island

3-5 October 2009

Coordinator: Jose Barrero and Arwen Mow-Lowry

Note: this trip has been cancelled due to lack of numbers and experience

Dear all,

The long weekend trip to Montague Island is back!

If you are sick of being on land and you feel the need to experience the wonders of being underwater again... come to Montague Island with the ANUSC for the long weekend 3-5 October.

While we are not going to limit numbers for this trip divers need to be aware that there will be only 1 boat for this trip. This means that if we have a lot of divers you may only get 1 dive a day in. There is a good shore dive at Potato Point, but this is a bit of a drive away.

Mystery Bay is located just south of Narooma, on the NSW South Coast. We'll be diving at Montague Island at a time of the year when there will be quite a big seal colony - and the seals are very fun to dive with! Also, if the currents and conditions are right, we may try to dive at Auginish Rock, which I think is one of the best dive sites on the South Coast. Michael McFadyen has more information on the diving in the area. There are lots of photos of the seals (and Montague and Mystery Bay) from our February 2009 trip.

Accommodation

The Mystery Bay Campground is located just south of Narooma. It's a really pretty little spot; and while it has drinking water, amenities-wise it comes equipped with drop toilets and a cold shower.

Mystery Bay is about 3.5 hours drive from Canberra. It is located about 8km (4.5 minutes drive) to the South of Narooma. Take a left off the highway at the sign "Mystery Bay", and continue for 1.5km until you are some 200m from where the road turns to the right as it comes to the coast. Here on your left you will find some signs and a maze of dirt roads leading into a fairly well wooded area. This is the camping area. If you go past the turn off on the highway you will soon find signs to a deer park, a winery and then you will come to the Tilba Tilba turn off. If you get to here you've gone too far.
