 Lady Musgrave Island

4-17 September 2006

Coordinator: David Clarke

It's time for ANU's annual pilgrimage north to the southern end of the Barrier Reef. This year the trip will kick off from Gladstone at roughly 7pm on Sunday the 3rd of September. We'll be staying on the island till the afternoon of the 17th of September. This means we'll have almost 2 weeks of diving in the warm waters of sunny Queensland.

Everyone is expected to be in Gladstone at noon (12:00) on Sunday 3rd of September. Driving to Queensland normally takes 1 1/2 to 2 days (so plan leaving Canberra on Friday 1st September afternoon or very early on Saturday 2nd September morning).

Lady Musgrave Island is part of the Capricorna Cays on the southern end of the Great Barrier Reef. We'll be heading out of Gladstone, which is a bit of a hike. It should take us around 8 hrs to reach our piece of paradise for 2 weeks.

The island consists of a small coral cay, covered with pisonia forest, and a large fringing reef and lagoon, several kilometres long. We take everything we need to be self sufficient dive operation for two weeks, including food, water, fuel, compressors, dive boats, and all the other dive and camping related paraphernalia. The island is a diving paradise, with a large variety of dive sites a short trip from the island. Of course, there is more to a tropical holiday than diving, and the opportunities at Musgrave are only limited by what you want to make of them.

To wet your appetite have a look at photos from previous trips:

As per previous years a maximum of 25 people can join the ANU trip, with the total number of people on the island limited to 40. This trip works well because everybody who comes contributes to the trip. This is your trip, and it is the people who come along who help make it a great trip.

Being a relatively new member to the club, I'm hoping this year's trip will include some of the newer members like me.

How do I sign up?
The first deposits will be taken at the AGM, on 14 March.

As there is widespread interest in this year's LMI trip, I would like to ask all members who have been there more than 5 times in the past 10 years to give others a chance and wait putting their deposit in at the AGM.

If you have any questions about the trip, or wish to volunteer to help, I can be contacted at, David Clarke. Alternatively I can be reached on 0423 130 238.
