Lady Musgrave Island (Great Barrier Reef)

26 June - 9 July 2005

Coordinator: Chris Bloomfield

Two weeks of unlimited diving on the Great Barrier Reef

Overview
Lady Musgrave Island is a small coral cay on the southern end of the Great Barrier reef, about 8 hours by boat from Gladstone in Queensland. The island consists of a small coral cay, covered with pisonia forest, and a large fringing reef and lagoon, several kilometres long. We take everything we need to be self sufficient dive operation for two weeks, including food, water, fuel, compressors, dive boats, and all the other dive and camping related paraphernalia. The island is a diving paradise, with a large variety of dive sites a short trip from the island. Of course, there is more to a tropical holiday than diving, and the opportunities at Musgrave are only limited by what you want to make of them. Facilities on the island are limited to composting toilets, there is no fresh water, no showers, no mobile phones, and no television. Sounds like paradise to me! A maximum of 25 people can join the ANU trip, with the total number of people on the island limited to 40. Remember that everybody is running this trip, and that everybody helps if there are things to be done. This is your trip, and it is what you make it. We take a huge quantity of gear on a specialty charter to the island, including two boats, moorings, compressors, a kitchen and stoves, tools, ice or gas fridges and freezers, plus 25 peoples personal camping and diving gear.

The details people want to know

When is the trip
We arrive on the island on Sunday the 26th of June, at the morning high tide. We will be departing the island on the Saturday the 9th of July. In addition to this period, we will need to allow some time at each end for driving to Gladstone. Expect to leave Canberra on the morning of Friday the 24th of June, and to return sometime on Monday the 11th of July.

How much?
A trip of this size is difficult to price accurately this far out. However, as a reasonable ballpark, expect to pay around $800 for students and non-divers, and $850 for non-students. This includes all meals on the island, unlimited diving and tank fills, camping fees on the island, and transport to the island on the boat. In addition to this cost, you will need to allow for: petrol to and from Gladstone, food for the trip to and from Gladstone, personal alcohol or confection and if using club scuba gear, the usual gear hire fees.

How do I sign up?
The trip opens at the AGM, and will be available to the first 25 people who pay their deposit of $200. Get in early to secure your spot! I will be able to take deposits in cash at the AGM, or after this date they can be transferred to the club bank account. The balance of the trip fees will be due approx 1 month before the trip. If you pay your deposit, and later withdraw from the trip, you will be eligible for a refund, only if the trip is full (i.e. we have 25 people going on the trip).

What am I expected to contribute to the trip?
This trip is run by us, for us. Everyone on the trip is expected to help out wherever possible. As a minimum, expect to: Help with preparing the boats and common gear around a week before the trip; then unloading and loading the tons of trip gear, help to set up the common camp facilities (kitchen, compressors, moorings) before setting up your own tents or going for a dive, expect to cook at least one night, and expect to have the time of your life.

In addition, I'm after two people who are willing to coordinate food, and to coordinate gear. I need someone to act as a food and meals co-ordinator, who will get together everyone's meal ingredient lists, and order sufficient food and ice. I need a gear coordinator, to oversee the club dive gear before the trip, ensure adequate spares are taken, and to lead setting up the camp gear, such as the compressors and freezers. If your interested, or able to take on either of these tasks, please let me know asap (also, it will secure your spot!)
